Mikaela Barnes

BScKin, MPT | Registered Physiotherapist | She/Her

Sport and Orthopaedics, Pelvic Health, Clinical Pilates, Biopsychosocial Model of Care

BURNABY, BC

Mikaela believes that your physiotherapy experience should be completely unique to you. Her vision is a collaborative approach guided by your values and individual goals. She cannot wait to connect with you and support you on your journey.

Mikaela was born and raised in the Ottawa Valley. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Master of Physical Therapy, both at Western University, before moving to the West Coast and setting roots in Burnaby. With a long-standing love for the outdoors, taking on any physical challenge, and reaching for new heights, it was love at first mountain sighting.

Through her high school and university years, Mikaela ran her own business teaching one-on-one swimming lessons to children. Both entrepreneurship and physiotherapy were strongly rooted in her upbringing as she looked up to her parents. She also developed a love of sharing knowledge and movement exploration with clients. From early years, she experienced the power of connection and ability to cultivate lifestyle change in a one-on-one setting.

Once out in practice, Mikaela dove into an orthopaedic practice and has worked with clients of all ages, including young babies and supporting development of their early milestones. The interest in pelvic health was a personal one - first, to better understand hormonal changes for females in endurance athletics, as a marathon runner herself, but second, to optimize the journey through pelvic cancer treatment. Mikaela appreciates first-hand the value of working with health practitioners that you can trust, the need for personal advocacy in health care, and the importance of a biopsychosocial approach in pelvic health. She hopes to cultivate client-centered care for each of her clients, in a calm and supportive space. She wishes for each of her clients to have an experience where they feel heard, cared for, and supported along the journey to their best life possible.

Outside the clinic, Mikaela is often found all over the city logging miles on foot, climbing the North Shore mountains by bike, braving bouldering problems, or conquering rock climbing routes with her husband. She also enjoys sampling the latest coffee shop or ice cream parlor!
